Neck Pain Treatment in Richmond, VA

Neck pain is a common condition that chiropractors treat.  It is often caused by excessive stress to the neck joints.  A large contributor of this is the computer.  Sitting in a posture that causes the head to lean forward puts excess stress on the neck.  Injuries from auto accidents or other trauma are also a large contributor.  Poor sleeping posture can also cause neck pain.  The joints in the neck become misaligned.  This in turn can stress or irritate the nerves in the neck.  Over time, this can cause neck pain.  The first step for treatment is to see a chiropractor.

Our chiropractic physician will locate the underlying cause of the problem.  This is done through a consultation, examination and if necessary x-rays.  The chiropractor can then create a treatment protocol based on the exam and x-ray findings.  This can include exercises and stretches to expedite the healing process.  This also helps improve the posture, so there is not so much damage occurring each day.  Treatment can also include manual therapies designed to loosen the muscles that surround the spine.  In addition, exercises may be given to the patient to strengthen those muscles.  At times, patients may also be given nutritional advice that will allow better healing in the neck area.  Reducing stress and increasing physical activity significantly reduce neck tension and pain.  They also compliment chiropractic treatment.  Dr. Mulvaney is an excellent Richmond VA neck pain doctor.

In terms of when is a good time to treat neck pain, as with any problem, early detection is always better.  The longer the problem has been present, as a general rule, the longer it takes to heal.  This is due to the fact that the longer a problem has been present, more damage is taking place to the spine and its related structures.  One common misconception is the pain will just go away.  Just because the pain is gone, does not mean that what caused the pain is gone.  Often this will eventually turn into a 'flare up' that never goes away.  Another misconception with neck pain is that the pain 'just showed up.'  pain that we feel is our bodies telling us something.  Unless there has been a recent trauma, pain is our check engine light coming on to let us know that there is a problem in a particular area of our bodies.

The last thing that we want to do to treat neck pain on an ongoing basis is to take medications.  This masks the underlying cause and also has a significant impact on the stomach, liver and kidneys.  Neck pain is becoming more and more common, especially in the workplace.  If you are looking for a natural solution for neck pain, call Spinal Correction Center at (804) 740-PAIN to schedule an appointment to find out if we can help.
